Then the stout front door was opening—and both Naylor and Lewis were there.

'You made it,' Naylor commented, coming over to them. Whereupon he bent down and laid a light kiss on Romillie's lips. Her heart went bumpity-bump, but she knew that his kiss was for her mother's benefit—just as she knew that there was nothing 'pretend' about the gentle kiss Lewis laid on her mother's cheek.

With Naylor taking charge of Romillie's weekend case, and Lewis taking Eleanor's from her, they moved indoors. And as Romillie glanced about her elegant surroundings, so for the moment she forgot the welter of worry that had refused to be pushed into the background on their journey.

'Your home is beautiful, Naylor,' she said softly as he and Lewis escorted them from the widehall, past the wide and thickly carpeted staircase and into a high-ceilinged drawing room.

'We've saved you some dinner if. .'

'We're not at all hungry,' Eleanor stated. 'We had something to eat before we left.'

No one made mention of why they were later than arranged, but anyone with a discerning eye could see that both mother and daughter were looking a shade pale, and that Eleanor's eyes were a tiny bit red-rimmed.

'Let me show you your rooms,' Naylor suggested, and all four of them went out into the hall and up the magnificent staircase.

It was plain to Romillie that, while doing nothing to detract from the beauty of the building, the inside had been completely updated. They went first along to the room given over to her mother, another high ceilinged, large and airy room with its own en suite bathroom.
